about

Lay of the Land is my most bucolic release. I've been struck once again with the beauty and tranquility of the British countryside. Yet even in the midst of this quietude there remains a vague discomfort. We escape from the town to the country and expect to be welcomed even with our town-ish idealizations of the country and our progressive views. But deep in the country the old ways still survive: at the ancient wishing well, in a Shropshire village, in a neglected garden, and along the coastlines that haunted folk like M.R. James. And if we are not careful the country and its ways might swallow us and leave no trace of our passing.
