A Ghost Song for Christmas
There is something about this time of year that my mind turns to melancholy. It is in our nature, I think, as we sense the end of the year and see but a few hours of that pale, warmless disc stationary in the southern sky. The year is closing, the chapter is over and we look back thinking on all that was and could have been.
We celebrate and bring bright cheer but there is an unquiet guest at the festivities. Shadowy but well-known there is a ghost beside the tree, eyes peering from behind the tinsel. And for all our glossy eyes we turn to hear the spectral guest. Crouching in the space between the presents and the mince pies the ghost prepares to tell a ghost’s story…
‘Winterssong’ is my homage to A Ghost Story for Christmas and to M.R. James - consider it background music to a tale to be told on a frosty night, with a warming fire (rare enough in these days) and a hearty dram.
